This page is just going to be what you think on the bill. Leave a comment on exactly what your opinions are and i will approve your comment as soon as possible.
Gay is not a bad word! We are humans, just like everyone else.
If you don’t talk about it, then it doesn’t exist. Much like evolution.
I applaud you for having stood up against this bill. The bill is ridiculous and shouldn’t even have been put forward.
I am with you! I assume the support for this site comes in major part from students, and I admire your dedication to free speech and fairness. I am a 69 year old straight guy with five daughters and twelve grandchildren. Thanks for helping to make their world a better place.
I live in the UK, where from 1988 until 2003 we had a very similar law on the books, called Section 28 of the Local Government Act.
One of the most insidious impacts of Section 28 was to practically legitimise homophobia in the education system. Homophobic bullying became endemic because teachers feared they would break the law if they intervened in homophobic bullying cases. Even 8 years after Section 28 has been repealed, schools in this country still struggle to address the issue, as teachers are poorly equipped to discuss the subject.
I really admire you guys for taking on the good fight, and wish you all the best!
i am horrified that a bill like this could gain even the slightest bit of traction. it is 2011. and, last i checked, this is a free country. such blatant homophobia is very plainly just ignorance and hate.
i stand with the brave folks in opposition to this disgrace of a bill!
Even if you object to homosexuality, this bill is a poor way to address that objection. Banning a topic, much like telling someone not to think of purple monkeys, simply doesn’t work. They might as well pass a law banning insanity.
On top of that, this bill is a lawsuit waiting to happen. Do the Tennessee taxpayers really want to spend the money to defend this law?
Obviously, the GOP DOES believe in big government, which they want to use to dictate what the schools teach students. If young children can learn about racial equality, then why can’t they learn about lgbtq equality? The only thing that 8th graders are too young to learn about is gay SEX, NOT queer RIGHTS. Come 2012, VOTE OUT the Nazi GOP, who oppose the Constitution and Declaration of Independence!
Don’t worry, racial equality is next to go.
I think it’s a horrific thing to even suggest this sort of legislation in congress. How can someone even think to restrict educational speech like that while being a part of a government founded on the principle that all “men” are created equal (though women nearly have equal rights now, but that’s beside the point). Our first amendment grants us freedom of speech. How daft does one have to be to completely overlook the text of the bill of rights? And how daft does the rest of the senate subcommitee have to be to pass it? I guess you can’t really expect much more from homophobic conservative representatives.
Anyways, I hope the protest that was spoken of goes over well. I can’t be there Sunday, but I wish whoever attends the best of luck. Give them hell….nonviolently, of course.
This Tenn state representative is either a dunce or, more likely, a political opportunist. Gay and lesbian students in 7th and 8th grade need guidance and protection from bullying more than ever before.
No child’s suicide is worth Camfiield’s (sic-perfect homonym!) bigoted effort to smear young gay and lesbian students to his own gain. Shame on you Rep. Camfield. If you were in my district I would vote against you!
it takes other voices like yours to bring change. Keep up this good work even after the bill is taken down. Homophobia is usually ignorance. Stop it before it becomes Hate.
It is ridiculous! “they” can’t make things they don’t like disappear by passing laws and forcing people to not talk about things, It sounds a lot like the Soviet Union, We aren’t free in the U.S., really, there are laws to fallow, you just have to behave and follow the laws like a good citizen should. This is a personal matter and should stay out of the government, it’s the same thing with abortion, the government should stay out of it. That’s just my opinion,
Keep up the great work, all! I’m emailing you from Michigan so you know that the whole nation is watching you. Making a word illegal will not make the meaning behind it go away! Best of luck!
Ask me, and I’ll STILL TELL. We’re humans.
I found out about this earlier today and can’t stop thinking about it. This is awful. I signed the petition and posted it on my Facebook. I called the local newspaper and ask for a story. Until today I hadn’t heard anything about this. They are keeping it quiet so they can pass this with out opposition. STOP them. Don’t just post here, don’t just sign the petition. I am not usually a “take action” kind of person. I became one today. I telling everyone I can and encourageing them to call their representative then telleveryone they can. If this bill is passed the back lash will be tremendous.
I hate this bill. Accept people for who they are and stop trying to fit them into some messed up definition of what’s “right.” Things like this bill are the reason homophobia is so prevelant.
This is ridiculous. There are still people out there that think if you don’t mention gay then your child won’t be gay. I never met anyone who was gay and it was not discussed at all as a teen. Of course I am gay. Have been all my life even though at 12/13 I did not understand why I was different. There is no better way to mess someone up then trying to change who they really are. Why do parents want to do that to their kids? Then they wonder why the commit suicide as a teen.
Yep the right-wing Republicans. I used to vote mostly Republican NEVER AGAIN, NEVER. Rights are being taken away from people. This has got to stop.
you guys are awesome.
the bill is totally unconstitutional, and I’m sure Tennessee has something in place to protect freedom of speech. this is fundamentally that issue.
Homosexuality CANNOT be taboo anymore. Our children deserve better than that.
Petition Signed!! It is absolutely ridiculous that this sort of bill is even in office! If I lived close enough to be able to drive across state lines & help protest in front of the court house, I’d be there in a heartbeat!! We’re so close to getting equal rights that it’s not even funny. We CANNOT & WILL NOT let this become a step backwards for us!
THIS IS COMPLETE BULL. I heard about this from Kristin’s personal post on Everyoneisgay.com. I AM FURIOUS. THIS IS UNCALLED FOR. WHERE CAN I SIGN THE PETITION AGAINST THIS?
The written petition isn’t going to make another public appearence unless the bill gets pushed back again but this is the online petition: http://www.thepetitionsite.com/131/petition-against-the-dont-say-gay-bill-sb0049/
It makes me SO happy to know that there are so many people against this bill and are so supportive of homosexuality. Being a lesbian it’s nice to know that there are so many people that I don’t know willing to do what they can to protect the rights that EVERYONE in America is born with and people that also think that your sexual orientation doesn’t matter–love is love. The Government really shouldn’t be trying to control what gender we marry when we were born with a constitution that says Americans are born free. Anyways, thanks for the support everyone!
I’m Dutch, I live in Germany, I have nothing to do with the US, so perhaps it’s inappropriate of me to comment. But: what kind of world do these people live in? This bill sounds like a joke. I guess gay kids already have a pretty difficult time in school, and now these people want to make it even more difficult? We all know how as a kid in school your life can be made unbearable by things we might think silly as adults, but for kids they’re very real. Kids who are ‘different’ in any way from the majority need help, love, encouragement, etc., not the message that whatever their worries are, their teachers are not there for them. In this day and age…
this is the stupidest thing I´ve ever heard of. What are they going to do when in history they come to the 1920s? They are known, after all, as “The Gay 20s”….
Soooo…a child who is having issues because of his or her sexual orientation will simply be ignored?
Bullying is ignored because no one is allowed to say why the child is being bullied?
How can people say “Gay” is a bad word I mean it used to be another word for Happy. When I first heard of this i thought this was a huge joke. Seriously these people need to wake up.
There’s been some confusion about this bill, and I promise you that the best way to understand it is to read my helpful Q&A on the subject: http://www.thetranscript.com/ci_17955934
Many people have told me that this Q&A really helped illuminate the issue for them, so I hope you’ll take a look.
This is ridiculous. Waste of time. What is there to even say?
When the Nazis came for the communists,
I remained silent;
I was not a communist.
When they locked up the social democrats,
I remained silent;
I was not a social democrat.
When they came for the trade unionists,
I did not speak out;
I was not a trade unionist.
When they came for the Jews,
I remained silent;
I wasn’t a Jew.
When they came for me,
there was no one left to speak out.

I am the 1976 Valedictorian from HIllsboro High School in Nashville. Attittudes like those in this bill are why I left the South. Talking about the existence of gay people doesn’t “confuse” children; not countering hateful ignorance is what confuses children.
My name is Jacob Ramsey, I am 18, Bi-Sexual and proud of it!!!!
I have achieved Black belt and EAGLE SCOUT. I am a Actor, singer, dancer, and stunt man. As you can see gays, bis, lesbians, or trans; can do the same thing as anyone in the world can XD…One day the world is going to be home to more bi-sexual and gay men and women. we have the the right of free will; so all the haters out there, BACK OFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! “
From the Far Land of Finland – Much moral support! It is a travesty if one is not allowed to talk about homosexuality! I hope your attempts to end this bill are successful!
I think this is a highly insensitive and discriminating word. Not being able to say gay in school would be just as ridiculous as not being able to say that someone is heterosexual or black. Why don’t these schools see that they are discriminating against an entire group of people? It’s blasphemy and if they think that those of us in the gay community and those of us who are allies to the gay the community are going to stand here and take it–well they have another thing coming to them!
Very sad. It passed; not sure if the gov has signed it yet, but he prob will. He was the Mayor of Knoxville, a really good one, but he’s not brave enough to veto it. He’s a low-key, spoiled rich kid; his dad started & owns Pilot Oil (Pilot gas stations/travel centers).
Stacey Campfield (from Knoxville – X’s district!!) is the low life who tried to get this passed for years, but there weren’t enough crazies to do it. I could write a novel on this guy; he’s quite a colorful, interesting local character, and only in his early to mid-40s!
He was finally successful in passing it this year because so many Democrats lost their seats last Nov. Tea partiers moved in to take over lots of state gov’ts, so ours was no different. Our state gov’t has always been an embarrassment, but they provided lots of humor, too. This bill was NOT funny, though.
I sent emails to Stacey Campfield & to state legislators, begging them to vote against this, but I knew it was a waste of time. Hopefully it will be ruled unconstitutional, like most of their idiotic bills are.
They also passed a bill requiring photo ids to vote, even though they were told that it was unconstitutional without a free photo id. They refused to order the state to issue free photo ids, and passed it anyway. Poor people can come up with $10, right? Too friggin stupid to comprehend it’s illegal; wouldn’t matter if it cost 50¢.
Stacey Campfield was “ushered” out of a UT home football game on 10/31/09 (Halloween).
It had been WELL publicized for over a month that NO costumes – ESPECIALLY MASKS would be allowed for security reasons. Stacey showed up dressed as a caped super hero, complete with mask (Mexican wrestler!?!).
His seat was in a moderately priced area, but after the game started, he moved to a vacant seat in an expensive area. There was a family nearby with children who were upset because their parents wouldn’t let them wear their costumes and/or masks. The bratty kids kept asking – loudly – why the adult was wearing a costume & mask, but they couldn’t. The parents asked Stacey to take it off. Instead of behaving as an adult, he yelled back; he’s well known & probably didn’t want anyone to know he’d broken the rules.
A very loud confrontation ensued, which brought the attention of the UT Police, who asked him to remove the mask. He refused. They asked for his ticket & discovered he wasn’t sitting in his seat. He kept getting angrier, refused to remove his mask, and wasn’t cooperative about moving on to his own seat. The UT police finally had no choice other than to remove him! Of course he claimed that it happened because of his “infamy” but it happened because he broke so many rules!! There are plenty of these stories!
He’s probably the typical homophobe. Bet he’s gay & in the closet; never been married, never seen dating, loves Mexican wrestling in costume? The only problem would be how hypocritical he’s been.
He’s been trying to pass this for years, and every year he starts other bills just as stupid, but most are harmless and very funny! He continues to get reelected, for entertainment, I think.
about an hour ago. I’m not sure that students can’t speak with guidance counselors or other administrators; my impression is that it applied to teachers only. But I could sure be wrong.
Happy Mother’s Day to you, too!
The text in the bil is a bit confusing. You aren’t supposed to teach about it, but since a counselor or principle can sometimes teach it depends.
Also, the bill has not passed. The bill passed the senate sub committee but still has not been put on the senate floor.
It is incredible that in this 21st century such a bill would even be put forth!
“Ridiculous ” is the only fitting word to describe it.
Our kids need to be taught about human sexuality in all its wonderful
diversity. Such a bill as this will only add fuel to the fire of homophobic
bigotry and endanger even more all of our kids who discover that they
Even if those crackpot asscrackers manage to pass the bill, I guarantee it will eventually be overturned. All it takes is one person to get charged with saying “gay” and the whole thing unravels once it appeals all the way to the US supreme court. The media will jump on it and the courts will decimate it. And there will be much rejoicing, as well of a newly heightened fear of censorship.
This bill is wrong, it goes against everything we stand for as a nation and more importantly, it’s 85 different types of illegal in the first place.
It doesn’t matter if they’re trying to ban saying “Nigger”.
If you give people the right to say whatever they want you cannot take it away from them because you don’t like what they’re saying. END OF FUCKING STORY. /rant
As someone mentioned previously, how does this NOT go against the first amendment? This is a terrible, terrible idea and Campfield is clearly afraid of his own desires.
I live in Memphis, TN. This is the comment I amended to the petition:
This is the kind of idiocy that makes other parts of the country — and the world — lump Tennessee in with backward places like Mississippi, South Carolina, Alabama and Afghanistan.
Can we recognize that: we live in the 21st Century; abuse and suicide of young LGBT people is linked to such ignorance as this bill would mandate; if this bill’s murky aim to prevent ‘abuse’ or ‘perversion’ a better strategy might be a Constitutional Amendment banning organized religion, especially the Catholic church.
Sen.Campfield: You’ve been pushing this hate for seven years. You have a real problem. The mask incident at the ’09 UT-SC Halloween game was a cry for help. We get it: you’re pretty.
News link to the ’09 Halloween mask incident:
I totally support you.
Here in Italy, our “government” doesn’t want to make a law against homophobia because, they say, it “would be discriminating against heterosexuals”.
“Excuse me, could you please tell me the way for the XXI Century?”
I am totally against this bill, which is an attack on civil rights and also a scapegoating of LGBT people to distract everyone from things politicians would rather not deal with. My question: will there be another protest? I would love to attend one. Many places will be celebrating Gay Pride in early June. Why not take that timely opportunity and make Pride even more meaningful?
Brian Stevens is running for legislature in TN. He is a supporter of LGBT rights and is dead set on stopping this bill from becoming law. Please contact him at the numbers below and let him know you support what he is doing.
